Casino Silver Strikes questions

The casinos in Las Vegas and Reno have slot machines that offer "Silver Strikes" as winnings. The strikes are silver rounds (?).

What is the weight of silver in a typical silver strike? They appear to have a gold plated rim, or is this a gold plated brass ring with a half ounce or smaller silver insert?

I see that there are collectors of the different strikes and a market on ebay.

My business partner "won" one from a slot machine. It is inscribed with '.999 silver'. There is no inscription indicating weight. I suspect that these are plated.

Ive also seen a bunch of them on Ebay, they seem more like a collectable though

I found a pile of these in a pawn shop recently. The middle was .999 silver, outside was bronze or something (not silver). They are way light. If I had to guess I'd say 1/2 ounce. I decided that they'd need to be about 2 bucks for me to bother with them.

I have a small collection of silver strikes. There are actually different denominations, but the most common strikes are the $10 tokens. The outside ring is brass and the insert is 6/10th of an ounce of .999 silver.

Big Rob is definitely correct about them being collectables. You can find many of them on Ebay for around face value. Many casinos are getting rid of their Silver Strike machines because 1) they don’t produce enough income and 2) the silver strikes are becoming more expensive to produce.

I enjoy having some from my favorite casinos although I don’t look at them as investments like I do my 90%. If the time ever comes when TSHTF, I am not sure a lot of people would trade me food for a <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" /><st1:place><st1:PlaceName>Caesars</st1:PlaceName> <st1:PlaceType>Palace</st1:PlaceType></st1:place> strike. Still, the coins make nice souvenirs and keep the numismatic side of me happy. :ARMS1:

I was looking at them in my recent trip to Vegas, Noticed, there was no-one playing those. I was trying to figure out,if they were real Ag, or just plated.
Decided, to play other machines and not the silver ones.
